Mud

The complex fluid circulates through the drillpipe, out through the "eyes" of the bit, and then returns to the surface through the annulus between the drillpipe and casing’s inner wall, or borehole wall. It has two purposes: (1) control hydrostatic pressure in the annulus to prevent inflow from the exposed formation or outflow into these formations; and (2) carry drill cuttings from the bottom of the hole to the surface.
