Ton-Mile

Measurement of the accumulated stress on the drillstring cable. After a predetermined stress value, the cable is “slipped” and a predetermined portion is cut from the cable. The purpose of this is to avoid excessive accumulation of stress, which occurs at the points where the cable passes around the sheaves (pulleys). The length of cable to be cut from the cable is determined by S-N analysis of the cable material.
